18 and 9 HOLE TOP CAT – FORMAT CHANGES - 2023
We are trialing a new format in 2023, with a view to making it easier for more members to participate and to manage.
2022 FORMAT Best 3 of 5 rounds played with the same partner.
SUMMARY OF FORMAT CHANGES 2023
- Multiple rounds
- Can play with different partners.
- The winners of each round qualify for a year end play-off. Depending on the numbers entered, one or two runners-up may also qualify for the play-off.
- A player can qualify for the play-off with up to 3 different partners, who they will then play with in the play-off.
BENEFITS OF FORMAT CHANGE
More inclusive
- Members joining during the season can participate in the competition.
- Members who cannot commit to multiple rounds can participate.
- Members whose partner cannot play can still play Top Cat on the day (with a different partner).
- Members whose partner leaves during the season can still participate in the competition.
- Easier for those who have not formed a partnership with anyone to join in.
- Those playing the later rounds who have not previously scored well or have not played any/many previous rounds still have something to play for.
More flexible
- Can add extra rounds during the season.
- Not under pressure to try and reschedule a cancelled round, particularly difficult if this happens towards the end of the season.
Meets the feedback from the majority of 18-hole members to the 2019 survey and programme review
- Prefer single round competitons to multi-round competitions – the format change provides a series of single round competitions
- Welcome immediate acknowledgement of success – prizes are given to the winners of each round.
- One of the preferred formats is four-ball – all members can play four-ball when a round is scheduled regardless.
